The Story

The Shelter is an art work that was created in response to the events of September 11, 2001.

As I worked in my studio that day and the following period, listening to public radio as usual, I could not help but think that the children should be sheltered from this kind of happening.  For them to be exposed to that kind of violence is a tragedy.  Then I thought about all the violence that children suffer every day in their own homes.  And I thought that they should be sheltered from that, too.

And so an art work evolved in my mind, that would reflect these ideas.  The interpretations and materials came together and formed a little house, with a family inside.  The artwork also took the form of a catalogue of textile techniques, and every one I could think of is incorporated into the work.

The bricks of the house are hand dyed, pieced silk, applied on board.
