I had recently acquired some fabric paint crayons (Shiva Paintstix) and had some “star” stencils, and the idea came to use them on sheer fabric to create blocks of ice, layered over a flexible foundation fabric and stitched together. I traced the divisions of an old paper world globe to make the pattern pieces, built a simple box of oak for the base, and used wooden embroidery hoops for the structural support. The work was tedious; it took three weeks just to make the fabric, and many personal interuptions and disruptions left me unable to work for weeks at a time.* But as often happens in my work, eventually I had too much time invested to abandon the project, and I really did want to see it come to fruition. Finally a day came when it was done enough for me to see a vision of the final container, and then my interest gained ground again, and I worked steadily to complete it, almost six months after beginning.
